Supervisors give final approval to Schoolboy Soldiers monument, take care of routine business

The Greene County supervisors at their May 11 meeting approved easements for Red Lion Solar to place solar installations at the secondary roads building in Jefferson, Spring Lake Park, and the new jail. That followed a public hearing attended by no one.

The supervisors gave final approval for the verbiage on the Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey monuments. One will be placed at the Old Rippey Cemetery and an identical one will be placed on the south lawn of the county courthouse.

Chuck Offenburger, a key organizer of the project, told the supervisors that Greene County high school students who have been involved with the project will be at a Memorial Day program at the Old Rippey Cemetery wearing reproduction Union Army Civil War uniforms. The program will be May 25 at 10 am. The troupe will appear in the Bell Tower Festival and other parades around the county this coming summer.

Sheriff Jack Williams reported construction of the new jail remains ahead of schedule, with completion expected before the end of August. He plans to hold a pair of public open houses and move inmates into the new jail the next day. Greene County is currently paying Guthrie County a daily fee to house 27 Greene County inmates, Williams is eager not to pay for care and keep of inmates.

The supervisors approved a 3-year contract with Cost Advisory Services handle submission of paperwork for reimbursement for indirect costs expended by the county on behalf of the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.
